OPERATING
The batteries can be inserted at any time, with the charger powered or not.  When the charger is powered up the LED will light up.

CHARGE AND END OF CHARGE FOR AA AND AAA
When the charger is plugged via the adaptor into the mains, the charge begins on its high current charge setting, the LED will blink green.  The end of charge occurs automatically at a detection of -∆V, at maximum voltage limit or at thermal criteria events.  For safety reasons, the charger is equipped with a safety timer adjusted at 15 minutes for high current charging and 1 hour for low currents.  In the latter case the LED indicator slowly blinks green at the lower rate.  When the end of charge is detected, the LED indicator remains on continuously.

PROTECTION
By the design of the charger, when a battery (AA or AAA) is inserted on the wrong way, there is no contact between the charger and the battery.  That is why the charge does not begin and the charging LED indicator does not illuminate.
